Edward Harbroe II
By 1773,
Edward Harbroe II, surgeon, was occupying "Elm Tree House" in High Street,
Ripley, Surrey.
In 1774 he bought the house for £800 and greatly enlarged it into its present day form. This Edward married twice
but it appears that is first wife, Mary Brooker, who died in 1771 at 23 had no children. A memorial (inscription to her memory on a wall of the church at Merrow, Surrey reads:-
"Let none enquire why thus at any Age, ~
Our great Creator calls us off the stage. ,
True Happiness (The Christian's Glorious Prize) "
Resides beyond the Grave, above the Skies". -

Information originally from Mr. John Slatford of the Send & Ripley .History Society and condensed a little by me:- By 1773, 'Elm Tree House' in High street, Ripley, which dates from .mid-I7th century, was occupied by Edward Harbroe (surgeon) and the house continued to be occupied by the Harbroes for 60 years and 3 generations. In 1774, Harbroe purchased two half shares from the son of William EVEREST (Yeoman) of Otford, Kent, and from :William HALL (Miller) of Ewell, Surrey for the price of £400 each. It was at this time that the house was greatly enlarged and it would appear from the road much as is is today. Edward HARBROE 11 had two other children apart from Jane (1783/92') and James (1788/88), viz, John (b.I782) who married Sarah JOHNSON and had a son, James (1812/33) and Louisa Frances (b.1789) who in 1811 married George HARDEN.
