Robert Gregory

1790-1851

Robert Gregory I was born 9th July, 1790 married to Alice Smith in 1828 and died 1851.

Alice was born in 1792 and born at Westhoughton.

The census records of 1841 show that there were two children living at home Robert born 1830 and Richard born 1832, the other son Thomas must have been absent when the census was taken. They lived at the time at ‘Rose Cottage’ Wigan Lane adjacent to a place called ‘the School Pit’.  Wigan Lane led to a town by that name 8 kilometres from Westhoughton.

The census records also show that a female servant and a farm labourer were employed and lived at the house.

There was an occasion when Tom the younger son, who had a reputation as a bare knuckle fighter, got into a tavern brawl and knocked a man onto an open fire. At this period of British history when transportation to the colony of NSW was the penalty, his father paid 200 gold sovereigns to keep the peace.
