Edward Harbroe
brother to George and Anne
Edward was born on 14th April 1808 studied medicine and became a Surgeon like his father.
"It should also be noted that the Edward HARBROE listed on p2 of your uncle's letter of II NOV 1967 also came to Tasmania but just when is not known. He was, like his father, a surgeon. He got into serious trouble "molesting small boys" and was sentenced in the 1870's to the Port Arthur Penitentiary where his brother-in-law, John Coverdale, was the Medical Superintendent and the last Commandant. 'The Penitentiary was closed about 1878 and at the request of his brother, George, Edward was sent to The Hospital for the Insane, New Norfolk, where he died in 1881.
Because HARBROE is such an unusual name it is of interest to tell you that another George HARBROE arrived as a convict on the 'Red Rover' on 26 MAR 1831 having been sentenced to transportation for stealing a saw. "
